JOB DESCRIPTION

 

MEDES, Institute for Space Physiology and Medicine, located in Toulouse, is a hybrid organization between space and health, an Economic Group of Interest, which was created in 1989 by the French Space Agency, CNES and Toulouse University Hospitals, its two main members. The other members include other French Universities and Hospitals.

The activities focus on space physiology and medicine, clinical research and dual innovations for space and health. In particular, MEDES provides support to space agencies, for human spaceflights, with expertise and operational support for operational space medicine or crew support. As part of these activities, MEDES contributes to an integrated team at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne, Germany. 

Due to an expected increase in activity over the coming months, we are looking for a Flight Surgeon to join our team of physicians.

DESCRIPTION / DUTIES

  • Participate in training courses in ESA, the United States (USA) or elsewhere, as necessary, to obtain ISS International Partner Flight Surgeon (ISS IPFS) certification from the ISS Multilateral Space Medicine Board (MSMB).
  • Deliver medical services to ESA astronauts and their immediate families (During spaceflight missions / training phases for spaceflight missions / pre-assignment phases / post-fight phases / post retirement phase within the framework of the ESA extended medical care program)
  • Oversee the routine and non-routine clinical examinations and follow-ups of the ESA active astronauts
  • Oversee the routine and non-routine clinical examinations and follow-ups of the ESA retired astronauts within the framework of the ESA extended medical care program
  • Apply the technical, safety and medical requirements of space missions
  • Participate in studies and medical projects to improve medical capabilities during spaceflight missions
  • Develop potential new scenarios and new response/treatment approaches for spaceflight missions
  • Support the definition, development, and implementation of space medicine concepts for future exploration type missions
  • Keep the ESA astronauts’ electronic medical records current and ESA Astronaut flight certification status updated
  • Review science protocols where astronauts participate in as test subjects to evaluate human ethical, medical and safety factors.
  • Participate in multilateral medical meetings and working groups as required for the implementation of spaceflight missions
  • Provide operational support during space missions as required
  • Develop and deliver astronaut medical training activities
  • Provide flight surgeon training to new flight surgeon candidates
  • Participate in regular clinical meetings and provide regular updates on latest medical knowledge
  • Participate in continuous education and training activities in the Space Medicine Team
  • Support the development and delivery of continuous education and training activities for the Space Medicine Team
  • Participate or manage other activities of the Space Medicine Team as required by the Head of the Space Medicine Team

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

  • As a qualified and licensed medical doctor, you are authorized to practice medicine in France, Germany, or other ESA’s members, with a completed internship clinical practice of 3 years. There is no limitation on the type of specialization, but preference is given to internal medicine, family physician or general practitioner, emergency medicine, intensive care or anesthesiology, general surgery.
  • To maintain certification as a Flight Surgeon, the successful candidate will be required to maintain clinical practice in parallel of the activities for MEDES and ESA, the candidate will thus have to demonstrate clinical practice  equivalent up to 50% of full-time working hours on average over a two-year period. This clinical activity must involve direct patient contact and responsibility for patient treatment.
  • The position is based in Cologne, Germany. Frequent travel within Europe and internationally is to be expected.
  • The position is available as soon as possible on a part-time, fixed-term contract, averaging 50% of full-time working hours (with the remaining 50% dedicated to clinical practice).
  • The employment contract will be governed by French law, while payroll and social security contributions will be administered in the employee’s country of residence (Germany).
  • Fluency in English is required and mandatory for this position.
