Ever since it was established, MEDES’s mission has been to provide services and expertise to protect the health of astronauts, and to control and manage the medical risks related to manned flight.
MEDES works in three main areas:
Space missionsMEDES participates in the medical monitoring of space flights as support for the activities of the European Astronaut Centre and also provides operational support to CADMOS for its physiology experiments, including those carried out on board the International Space Station.
Medical researchMEDES participates in the preparatory activities carried out on the ground to test methods for protecting the health of astronauts. For this purpose, MEDES makes its Clinical Research Centre available to the space agencies, where they can carry out bed-rest studies to simulate the effects of microgravity on the human body.
Technological researchMEDES works on the issues raised by the adaptation of the human body to a new environment with particular responsibility, among other missions, for promoting and participating in the research and development of new space technologies in the field of health.
