Advanced Robotic Tele-echography Integrated Service
ARTIS (Advanced Robotic Tele-echography Integrated Service), is an Integrated Applications Programme from the European Space Agency (ESA), that aims to design an end-to-end robotic tele-echography service and to assess its sustainability. It is active since the 30th of November 2007 for a time period of 2 years.

WHAT IS THE TELE-ECHOGRAPHY ? Tele-echography is a system allowing an echography expert to move by hand a virtual probe and safely reproduce this motion on the distant robotic site where the patient is. Then, mainly based on the echographic images and force information he receives back on his computer screen, the expert operator can move the virtual probe to control the real one. Thus, a tele-echography system is composed of an expert station (placed on the expert site) and an isolated station (placed on the patient site). Tele-echography is based on several telecommunications services: reproduction of the echography expert motion, with touch perception, visiophony between three people (echography expert, parademic operator and patient), real-time image transmission and real-time multi-users image sharing, or off-line transmission. The communication between the expert and the patient sites can be done through the telephone lines on the ground or by satellite.

For two years, ARTIS study will demonstrate and validate on several pilot sites the feasibility of a tele-echography service platform, transposable to multi-modal imaging, in real situation. The process to evaluate the service will be supplemented by a market study and will lead, by 2009, to a sustainable business model. Combined with satellite communication, the assisted echography can therefore significantly improve the quality of access to healthcare for all anywhere on the planet. Other major interest: Carrying out an examination at distance can provide a solution to the lack of specialists.
